Peter’s Denial

Matt 26:31-35 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you in Galilee.” Peter replied, “even if all fall away on account of you I never will.” “Truly I tell you.” Jesus answered, “This very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you,” and all the other disciples said the same.

Denial is the same as a lie to me. I remember as a young kid when my mother would say did you do….? My answer would usually be no mom I swear I didn’t do it, knowing darn well I did but didn’t want to be punished. I think in many ways that is why Peter denied or lied knowing Christ. He knew he could and probably would be persecuted just for knowing him.

Peter was not a kid when this happened and neither am I at this point. Do I deny doing something from time to time? I am very sure I do. It’s not because I think I will get into trouble but more because I don’t want to disappoint people around me or make myself look like a fool.

What I notice in these verses is that Christ does not condemn Peter, though he knows what he’s going to do, nor does he even say you lie, not only lie to yourself but to me. That is what we do when we deny or lie. We do it not only to ourselves, the person we are talking with but more important we lie to Christ. There is no condemnation in Christ. He is not someone who will be angry with us. Aren’t we the blessed ones for that? What we need to remember is that He knows the answer already so denying it can make us feel even worse.

What are you denying? Is it something that would grieve the Holy Spirit? Is there a way you can find to remedy that now? Only you can make that decision. But only Christ will not condemn you for it. I guarantee a peace will come over you when you lift up your sins to him.

Lord, we all deny or lie whichever we choose to call it.
Help us to be more honest with you. This will come when we realize deep
Down that you already know.
In your precious name we thank you that you do not condemn us
But instead you love us.

Amen
